NTIA-BTOP Program
The SHLB Coalition's first initiative was to support the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. With our support, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) -- an arm of the US Department of Commerce -- provided approximately $4 billion in funding for programs to support the deployment and use of high-capacity broadband services to community anchor institutions. The BTOP program, which was largely completed in has now connected over 20,000 anchor institutions with high-capacity broadband, and the broadband adoption and public computer center programs led to 2 million new subscribers to broadband services.
